JEFF TWEEDY, CHICAGO, 2004

There’s nothing like a live performance by Jeff Tweedy and friends. Here’s one from 2001, Wilco playing ‘War On War’, on Letterman. It’s hard to believe a decade has passed since this record came out. Much has happened to me since then. Some so amazing, I ache when I realize I can’t go back. Some so horrible it pains me to think that I will carry those memories unwillingly to the end. Throughout those years, it’s safe to say that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was, and continues to be the largest contributor to the soundtrack of my life. Fortunately, I’ve been able to attach more cherished memories to this record than any other, and even more with the band.
Thanks to a man named Ross, for making me listen to Being There and Summerteeth for three straight days of driving through all of Virginia, (taking only a few short breaks to listen to a punk/country band from Philly, Marah) analyzing every lyric and audio detail of “She’s A Jar.” It was the first of many great memories I would have, where Wilco would be at the center. There is no doubt, that ride changed my life.
When I came home I made sure to pay it forward and introduce my friends to the brilliance of a band from Chicago. A band I so easily dismissed for years (I actually already owned Being There and A.M., but never paid attention) merely a few short days earlier. Those dudes didn’t fight as hard as I during the introductions. They weren’t in that car driving through Virginia either, but I know they’re happy I was. It’s amazing how one small moment for one, can have such a huge effect on so many.
It’s been 10 years since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot came out. I’ve listened to that record a thousand times and I will most likely listen to it a few thousand more before I check out. And in the end, when its all over… in my fragile family tree, you’ll watch me float inches above, the people under me.
Thank you, Ross. Thank you, Jeff.
